Y'know what I miss? Sleeping.
Finals are a'goin' on and I'm half way through. While doing illustration work, I've been listening to the His Dark Materials trilogy on audiobook, and it's goood... it makes me real glad I never saw the Golden Compass movie. I just finished listening to The Subtle Knife and it'll probably be long after finals until I get ahold of The Amber Spyglass. I'm surprised it's been marketed so heavily as a children's story, there's so much violence and politics and espionage and character mortality and morally grey areas, I don't think I would've been able to handle it as a kid. In conclusion, I want a daemon.

I finished my Book Illustration final last night (see also: this morning). The assignment was to do a children's book cover, I chose Aesop's Fables. (I've actually been wanting to to an Aesop's Fables illustration since high school, so this was a good chance.)

There was text originally, but it was kinda mleh so I took it out.

[info]emlan did a Mucha-styled picture a little while back, and while trying to figure out what to do for my final, I thought, HEY I LIKE ALPHONSE MUCHA TOO MAYBE I WILL DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

S--sorry for stealin' your thunder, Emlan.

... ... ...

While I was breaking from working, I cleaned out my LJ a little. Mostly, I deleted over half of my old icons and uploaded a few new ones. It feels nice to have some new icons.

7 hours of sleep in the past two days: not the greatest.

Also, if anyone spoils The Amber Spyglass for me in the comments, I will be very disappointed.

Love the art nouveau. :D

The Amber Spyglass is my favorite of the trilogy.

Really? :D That's great to hear, a lot of my friends who've read it have given me very vague and somewhat negative reviews. At the moment, the first book is definitely my favorite. :D

That's an awesome piece too! *nouveau lurv*

Haven't read them yet, but I might start now... *searches for books*

Oh! Gorgeous illustration. I think Mucha's style complements yours very well.

As for text, ever hear of Arnold Bocklin? I'm not saying that your illustration needs text, but it's a fun font for art n...n...nuveau? Noveau? Ahh, I don't know how to spell it, I get it wrong every time.

(Sorry, you don't know me, but I love your artwork, I give it lots of thumbs up)

*looks up* I'm assuming you mean the font? Haha, that's THE Nouveau font, isn't it? I'll try and find a free version of it! :D I tried a menagerie of fonts, but most of them made the book look like it was from the 1970's. XD

I know you to the point that I recognize your user name and icon. :D If you haven't posted on my journal before, you've definitely posted on my friends' journals.

I've read the First two books of the series, well one and a half. They're pretty good! I will read the other half of the Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass eventually but right now I have Hogfather to read. I want a daemon too, I took the quiz and got a mouse.

Is that the Fox and the Raven? Its a lovely illustration anyway!
I have a question to ask you, someone has been hastling me over a character of mine saying her head looks like Aido's and giving me grief about it. My character is here http://silvolf.deviantart.com/art/AvistA-Reference-Sheet-55827380
Please can you let me know what you think of her head design? Loads of people have characters with short muzzles but I wanted to set things straight with this person and see what you thought.

Maybe you should post the ripped sprites, traced drawing and concept, etc etc to let her see a real idea of how sad it is?

DAEMONS ARE THE SHIT

I read that book in fifth grade and reread it recently. There was so much stuff I got now that I didn't get back then, really.

I did get this though: I want a daemon too.

That is some pretty pretty Fables picture. :'D I never read any of 'em though. T3T

First, that book cover looks really beautiful. You could sell that as a print, seriously.

Second, I keep hearing all this good stuff about the Golden Compass books, but from what I've read about them it doesn't seem all that interesting. Like I can see it being good, but yet the explanation doesn't seem to match what I think would be good... or something like that. It's hard to explain I guess.

It's the Fox and the Raven ... the raven has a piece of cheese and the fox praises him highly; the raven opens his beak to thank the fox and the cheese drops out. The fox runs off with the cheese ... the moral is something along the lines of not trusting your enemy.

The art is really pretty, babe!

Ooooh! Yes, it's the Fox and The Raven. And it reminds me of a mural that was painted in my elementary school featuring the story of the Fox and The Grapes.

I WANT A DAEMON TOO! except both our daemons wouldn't be all changing anymore... sadface.

I've only read Golden Compass, and I've also seen the movie. Book-to-movie, it wasn't bad. I would've changed lots of stuff about it, but it's a very acceptable adaptation. (Plus... yanno... IanMcKellan!bear...)

The fox's fur and tail look so fluffy, I want to pet him despite the teeth. And the color scheme is pretty.

I need to actually spend money and get the trilogy since I haven't been able to find them in nearby libraries. I remember reading the first one when I was younger...lovely universe, that.

Oh, I avoided the movie too; far too fond of the books, and the audiobooks in particular. I listened to the first one as a kid before I even read the book, so the voices are imprinted in my head. Wonderfully read, too.

And that illustration is lovely! Very pleasant sight amid my own 2am-homework-panicking ;)

Tried to think of some clever Amber Spyglass spoiler, and stopped trying when Batman entered the scene. No cleverness here, I'm sorry. ;)

Seriously, though, I read those late/post-college, and then lent them to my mother, who enjoyed them as well but told that while she pretty much let me read whatever I wanted as a child, had this book been in question, she'd've made me wait until I was older than the 'read at' age, because she thought it was one of the most 'subversive' series she's read. And I must agree, though I was very mature as a kid, i don't know that I could've handled it that well, either.

TO THE ART.

I lovelovelove Mucha, and I lovelovelove your art. Also love Aesop's fables, too. So this = oh such happiness. It's exquisite, yay!

The fables been recognizd, so I'll not state the obvious.

BEAUTIFUL!!!

So much love for the His Dark Materials trilogy. The first book was my favorite, and I see the weaknesses in the story now, but few books have had that kind of an effect on me. I sometimes try to guess what other people's daemons would be when I'm bored on the bus.

Mine: Definitely some sort of cat. x)
