Art post, then runnin' to Katsucon
Hi everyone! Sorry it's been a while. Ananth and I are headed down to Katsucon soon, so I'll post this as quickly as I can.






The multicultural squad, or whatever Conrad called them. >:/ I drew this at Setsucon a while back and finally got around to coloring it. I'm not great at drawing guys, b-but maybe I will be some day--!! WHO KNOWS

this is terrible and I don't know why I'm posting it. Back at Setsucon, I forgot my pencil case so was drawing with a blue pen. I later stole a pencil from Chris. But there's Forza! AWW WHO'S A GOOD KITTY





Speaking of Chris, a while back he asked Ananth and myself to do some surfboard designs for his new book. I'm so five-out-of-ten on these, but I did them in a rush, and he liked them, so that's a plus. :D

I finally dove into Pose Maniacs! Wow, what a great tool.
I've been trying to design North's feet practically -- they're mostly based off an emu's feet right now. I need to draw some Soleon studies, their anatomy is so wonky.
I might ink this later --


A warmup sketch I did off my PoseFile book. I am trying to form a better relationship with my brush ... IT IS DIFFICULT. Things look better when I use a brush, but it also takes about 10x as long. I love how organic the lines look as opposed to the crow quill-- it probably suits my personality more-- but I am also a stickler for control. BLEURG

I have a bit of time between projects right now, I'll be spending some of it practicing not being awful.

So hey, if you're at Katsucon today, I'll be hanging at the Applegeeks table flirting with Jess folding t-shirts or whatever. We will have Phoenix Down shirts if you want them.

I should mention, at NYCC last weekend (o-oh yeah, I was there too), Ananth and George and I wound up chilling with the Oni Press dudes for a bit. Charlie (who is a fantastic photographer with a KILLER CAMERA) took some great photos of the weekend. Check out his flickr! i-it is like we are in a movie

I seriously love the North Soleon pose - i'm bookmarking that site!

Since you're looking at the feet of flightless birds, have you seen an ostrich's foot?



Might help, although i like the Emu foot on the design.

Ostrich feet are the first feet I researched actually! I decided that they were too weird and impractical, since Soleons don't live in a flat environment and they also climb. I wound up going for something that would be a good platform for running but could also grasp and BLA BLA BLA I THINK TOO HARD ABOUT THESE THINGS

THANK YOU FOR BEING SO THOUGHTFUL, MIKE I really do appreciate it. ALSO OSTRICH FEET ARE SO WEIRD.

The surfboard designs look great. I think the yellow version is my favorite.

The guys also look greatttttttt.

Though I think my favorite thing here is everyone with maws on their heads. xD

I started playing with a brush and I try to add words to things (because maybe everything needs an explanation...maybe) and it all goes down hill from there. But I can see somewhere in the future how wonderful it will be when I either get it under control, or learn to deal without the control.

I think the key is a balance of control and that organic chaos... but probably more control and then being careless enough to have that organic element in there. But yeah, it all boils down to practicing and never stopping. :/

Oh man, look at all those different faces. I love that they all have different facial structures! I feel your pain on the male drawin'...I need to learn how to draw 'em better too...

Also, Pose Maniacs looks to be awesome. That is something that I need to develop my skills. Thanks for sharing...however inadvertently. XD

I've been trying to learn brush and ink. It's damnnn hard the control; but I agree, the results are so yummy that it's hard not to want to use it. :C You look like you handle it well! I really like the naked chick's left hand! And also awesome perspective on that North fella. EMU FEET.
